Our daily lives are valuable and beautiful because we have hope for a better tomorrow. Hyosung Chemical has been contemplating.
How can we create a better future for the next generation?
In the meantime, Hyosung Chemical has dedicated itself to creating a better tomorrow, striving to make everyone's daily lives brighter, more beautiful, and more comfortable. Over time, it became evident that the status quo was no longer sustainable. It is widely understood today that the imperative to mitigate and capture carbon extends to every aspect of our lives - from our industrial practices to our marine ecosystems and even our daily routines. Without a concerted effort to enhance plastic recovery and foster the creation of eco-friendly resources, the prospects of a brighter future for both ourselves and future generations remain uncertain.
The paradigm of chemistry needs to change from one that creates, to one that preserves, improves, and creates new solutions. Hyosung Chemical calls this chemistry for the next generation "The Next Chemistry.” Hyosung Chemical's scientific efforts are not separate from its ESG efforts, in which we take full responsibility for our technology and the environment in which we live to minimize carbon emissions and develop fibers that do not defy nature. Hyosung Chemical’s prerequisite mission is to develop technologies that produce materials closest to nature.
Furthermore, our direction towards "The Next Chemistry" at Hyosung Chemical is aimed at our future and the next generation, prioritizing ESG initiatives.
Sustainability for the Next Generation
To sustain and advance human civilization, chemical production is essential. Hyosung Chemical is committed to minimizing the potential environmental damage caused by such chemical production activities. The exciting news is that Hyosung Chemical's development of eco-friendly technologies is approaching the right direction to benefit both humanity and nature. As part of its carbon reduction initiative, Hyosung Chemical is developing hydrogen ecosystems, membrane water treatment systems, eco-friendly polyketone and post-consumer recycled (PCR) technologies and products to minimize carbon emissions from production and manufacturing processes. Furthermore, we are spearheading the development of innovative materials that reduce carbon footprints and pioneering technologies that convert carbon into hydrogen as a byproduct by promoting resource circulation and reducing carbon emissions. Hyosung Chemical aims to become the leader in 'The Next Chemistry' by making existing chemical technologies more eco-friendly.
Hydrogen-Breathing Society - Creating a Hydrogen Ecosystem
One way to address climate change is establishing a hydrogen ecosystem that reduces carbon emissions. In Hyosung's hydrogen value chain, Hyosung Chemical produces liquid hydrogen. The by-product hydrogen generated during polypropylene production, a key plastic raw material, can be converted into blue hydrogen using Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology. In addition, together with the world-renowned Linde Group, we are constructing the world's largest liquid hydrogen plant with an annual capacity of 13,000 tons by 2023.
Hyosung is quietly paving the way to usher in the hydrogen era by expanding the infrastructure for liquid hydrogen plants and hydrogen fueling station throughout the country. As a Global Clean Energy company, we aim to achieve true carbon neutrality for the Republic of Korea by producing 'green hydrogen,' which emits no greenhouse gases.
Water and Food of the Future - Developing Membrane Water Treatment Systems
Membrane, which means 'a barrier or layer that filters something,' can solve issues of food shortage problems and water scarcity issues when applied to water treatment systems. Membrane water treatment systems utilize a form of filtration that selectively permits the passage of desired substances while filtering out unwanted ones. This system employs a hollow fiber structure with filtration holes measuring 0.03 micrometers in size.
Membranes, which mean 'a barrier or layer that filters something,' can solve food shortage problems and water scarcity issues when used in water treatment systems. A membrane water treatment system uses a form of filtration that selectively allows certain substances to pass while excluding others. With this system, small 0.03 micrometer filtration holes are embedded in hollow fiber structures.
The membrane water treatment system removes over 99.99% of turbidity, coliform bacteria, pathogenic protozoa, and other impurities from water, ensuring drinking water quality. Hyosung Chemical has been developing submerged water treatment technology since 2012 and has obtained certification for new membrane environment technologies such as pressurized membrane filtration, water treatment technology, and two-stage submerged water treatment system. Hyosung Chemical is fulfilling its social responsibility to safeguard the planet for future generations through various initiatives, including the development and implementation of membrane environmental technology.
Natural Plastics - Polyketones
Hyosung had been thinking about becoming environmentally friendly for a changing planet. One of the answers was a new eco-friendly chemical technology, and Hyosung Chemical created "polyketone," a highly effective plastic in reducing carbon.
Polyketone, which has excellent shock resistance, chemical resistance, and wear resistance, reduces amount of carbon dioxide produced during the production process and improves energy efficiency. In particular, it has been recognized for its harmlessness and safety to the human body and is used in a wide range of products, including tableware, infant toys, and medical parts, as well as automobile exterior materials. It has also been applied to water meters in Seoul, proving antifreeze’s effect and reducing carbon emissions. Hyosung Chemical’s polyketone solution will be applied to more fields and will benefit the earth and us all in the future.
Reinventing plastic - Post Consumer Recycled (PCR)
For our society to maintain its functionality, numerous pipelines and systems must operate safely and flawlessly. Hyosung Chemical's PP/DH, used in constructing infrastructure for countless cities, strives to produce safer and more impeccable materials. As part of our commitment to protecting the environment, we also recycle resources and improve performance.
Hyosung Chemical's PCR PP has completed development and is already in the commercialization phase. Recently, Jamsil Sports Complex decided to replace its disposable containers with Hyosung Chemcial’s PCR PP. Since PCR PP recovers and recycles PP multi-dose container products through a single supply channel, such as sports stadiums, it will contribute to reducing domestic garbage emissions by producing high-quality PCR PP.
Environmentally Friendly Packaging Technology – Eco-Friendly Film
Hyosung Chemical Film PU is committed to developing technologies to transform our lives and create a better tomorrow. In particular, we have recently focused on the importance of environmental friendliness and have developed eco-friendly products using PET Bottle Recycle Chip (PCR PET) materials to reduce environmental pollution. The eco-friendly polyester film, which has more than a 30% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional polyester film, can achieve a maximum content of environmentally friendly materials of up to 99%.
Hyosung Chemical plans to discover and expand new eco-friendly products to keep pace with the environmental regulation of 'recycling more than 50% of plastic packaging waste.’ In particular, we will expand the application of PCR PET film in various areas, such as everyday consumer goods, food packaging, and industrial use, creating a new trend in the eco-friendly packaging market. Hyosung Chemical is committed to doing our best in R&D to ensure happiness for us and future generations.
Chemical technology provides us a more joyful life and prosperous future. We need it for everything mankind consumes, but the damage it causes to the environment is not something anyone can turn a blind eye to. Hyosung Chemical is making every effort to develop the chemical technology we need in a sustainably, aiming to create chemical technology that benefits both humans and the environment.
Hyosung Chemical is committed to developing chemical technology that meets our needs and contributes to the environment for the next generation. This is what Hyosung Chemical refers to as 'The Next Chemistry.'
